Like many New Zealanders, I wanted to speak peace over our homeland after the attack in Christchurch. Instead of terror, PEACE was engraved deep into our national identity as we stood against terror getting a foothold. We went soul searching about discrimination and drew closer together. We declared the 1% of our population who are Muslim to be "Us". Salam, peace in Arabic is worked into the folds of the land in the painting and the kea, who has turned into a recurring figure since an artist residency in Arthur's Pass, is leading the viewer into the painting. I have painted 4 paintings around this theme. 2 of the others are much larger, a meter and a half long and are available through Mobile Art Gallery in Mt Eden, Auckland. And the first one painted in the series, "Beautifully Scarred" which I had started before the attack, has sold and gone to an offshore Kiwi living in the USA.
