Cracks and Crevices moves into that space high among the mountains, where ridgelines fracture and shift, and the terrain reveals its age through break, fold, and shadow. Painted from an aerial perspective, the viewer is lifted into the landscape, moving between peaks as though suspended in air, tracing the lines where rock has split and settled over time.
The palette sits within a nuanced range of greys, layered and adjusted—cool, warm, and softly tinted—creating depth without relying on contrast alone. Subtle shifts in tone carry the eye across the surface, allowing the structure of the land to emerge gradually rather than all at once.
There is a tension held within the work: solidity and movement, permanence and change. The mountains feel grounded, yet the fractured surfaces suggest ongoing transformation, as if the land is still quietly reshaping itself.
This piece continues Miranda J. Caird’s exploration of New Zealand’s mountainous terrain, where memory, movement, and structure are woven together through a refined and restrained palette.
